DPI NAC RWN Coordinator accepts invitation from UNIFEM and CAFRA St. Lucia

Disabled Peoples' International North America and the Caribbean Regional Women's Network Coordinating Committee (DPI NAC RWN CC) Coordinator, Nathalie Murphy accepted an invitation from the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) Caribbean Region Office and the Caribbean Association for Feminist Research (CAFRA) St. Lucia to attend a regional meeting on the United Nations Secretary-General's campaign: "UNiTE to End Violence against Women" from October 19-20, 2009 at the Bay Garden Resort in Castries, St. Lucia, W.I.  Here is the agenda for the meeting.

DPI NAC Regional Women's Network Coordinating Committee sit down to plan strategically

As part of its Governance and Democracy Capacity Building Project 2009, the Disabled Peoples' International North America and the Caribbean Executive included a strategic planning meeting for the Disabled Peoples' International North America and the Caribbean Region Women's Network Coordinating Committee (DPI NAC RWN CC) from June 18-19, 2009 at the Accra Beach Resort in Christ Church, Barbados, W.I.

The strategic planning meeting was funded by the Commonwealth Foundation and the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) Caribbean Region Office, and facilitated by Norma Shorey-Bryan of Catalyst Consultants in Barbados, W.I.

As the MS Word version of the report shows, the DPI NAC RWN CC strategic planning meeting was adjusted from June 18-19, 2009 to June 18 & 20, 2009 so that the RWN CC could participate in the NGO management workshop of DPI NAC Regional Council.  However, the time allotted for the meeting was only able to produce a draft strategic plan.

UNIFEM Caribbean Region Office accepted another proposal from the DPI NAC Office to provide funding for the consultant to work with the RWN CC via teleconference to complete the strategic plan.  UNIFEM already granted the funds to complete the plan.

DPI NAC re-launches the Regional Women's Network!

When the disability consumer self-help movement began in our region, women with disabilities were an integral part of its formation.  The issues addressed in the initial stages were gender-related, and as the movement developed issues specific to women with disabilities emerged.  Many national assemblies established disabled women's groups and focused their attention on issues such as domestic violence, family life, reproductive health and economic independence.

Through numerous regional meetings and training programs, women with disabilities were empowered, and many now hold leadership positions with their organizations.

The disabled women's movement within the region became inactive for some time mainly because of the absence of a functioning regional secretariat.

This has changed with the establishment of a regional office and our region has become pro-active again.  The opportunity was taken in Antigua in January 2004 during a capacity building conference to begin the process of revitalizing our regional women's network.  In April 2005, the first meeting of a steering committee was held with ongoing meetings taking place via telephone.

The modus operandi drafted by the steering committee was adopted with some minor changes prior to the launching of the Network.

The steering committee was dissolved at the Disabled Peoples' International North America and the Caribbean (DPI NAC) Regional Assembly 2006, and the following women with disabilities were elected to the DPI NAC Regional Women's Network (RWN) Coordinating Committee:
